Aussiedoodle

Varies; Mini ~25–45 lbs, Standard 45–70 lbsVery high11–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Sedentary homes, first-timers wanting easy, long-hours-away owners, or anyone charmed by the looks who can't match the engine. A bored Aussiedoodle is a genuinely unhappy, destructive dog.

Bred to do

A cross of Australian Shepherd and Poodle — two of the smartest, most driven breeds. Bred as a clever, active companion, but the working drive is intense.

Exercise needs

Very high, and mental work is mandatory. Long walks alone won't cut it — they need running, training, dog sports, or a real job daily. One of the most demanding doodles.

Temperament

Brilliant, driven, energetic, affectionate, sometimes reserved with strangers. Strong herding instinct — may nip and chase. Needs a busy, engaged owner.

Trainability

Extremely high — they learn fast and love to work — which cuts both ways: without a job they invent obsessive or destructive habits.

With kids & pets

Good with an active family, but the herding drive means chasing and heel-nipping at running kids and pets. Early training is essential.

Living situation

Poorly suited to apartments or sedentary homes. Thrives with space, activity, and an owner who lives an active life.

Grooming & shedding

Wavy/curly coat — NOT guaranteed non-shedding. Needs regular brushing and professional grooming to prevent matting.

Health & costs

Watch hip dysplasia, eye disorders, epilepsy, and the MDR1 drug-sensitivity gene (Aussie side) — ask your vet about testing. Health-test both parents.

Best fit

Highly active owners — runners, hikers, dog-sport people — who want a whip-smart partner and will work its body and brain every day.

A note from Kerri

Aussiedoodles are dazzling and the single most over-their-head doodle I see land in the wrong home. Two working breeds stacked together is a huge amount of drive. If you're not seriously active, please choose a calmer cross — for both your sakes.
