Akita

Large; 70–130 lbsModerate10–13 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

First-time owners, homes with lots of other dogs, or anyone wanting an outgoing, obedient family dog. Their strength plus reserve plus dog-reactivity is a lot to manage.

Bred to do

A powerful Japanese guardian and hunting breed, bred to hold large game and protect the home — dignified, loyal, and strong-willed.

Exercise needs

Moderate — daily walks and play. Not hyperactive, but they need consistent exercise and, more importantly, structure and mental engagement.

Temperament

Dignified, loyal, reserved, and deeply devoted to their own people — often aloof or suspicious with strangers. Strong-willed and territorial.

Trainability

Challenging — intelligent but independent and stubborn, with a low tolerance for repetition. Needs a confident, experienced owner and lifelong, respectful consistency.

With kids & pets

Loyal with their family's children when raised with them, but often dog-aggressive (especially same-sex) and high prey drive. Not a dog for busy dog-park or multi-pet chaos without serious management.

Living situation

Best in a home with a secure fence and an experienced owner. Their guarding instinct and reactivity to other dogs demand careful management.

Grooming & shedding

Thick double coat that sheds year-round and blows heavily twice a year. Regular brushing; a lot of fur.

Health & costs

Watch for hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, autoimmune conditions, and bloat. Buy from health-tested lines. Large-breed costs.

Best fit

Experienced owners who want a loyal, dignified guardian, understand primitive/guardian temperaments, and can commit to socialization and firm, respectful training.

A note from Kerri

Akitas are magnificent and fiercely loyal — but they are a guardian breed with real strength and a real opinion. They aren't for beginners, and they're rarely the easygoing multi-dog-household dog people picture. In the right experienced home, the bond is extraordinary. In the wrong one, it goes sideways fast.
