Labrador Retriever

Medium-large; 55–80 lbsHigh11–13 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

People who want a calm, low-energy companion, who are gone long hours, or who can't commit to daily hard exercise. A bored, under-exercised Lab is the 'crazy dog' people complain about — it's not the dog, it's unmet needs.

Bred to do

Retrieving waterfowl for hunters — bred to work all day, swim, and carry things in their mouth.

Exercise needs

A lot. Plan on 1–2 hours of real activity daily — walks plus running, fetch, or swimming. A Lab that isn't exercised gets destructive, not calm.

Temperament

Friendly, outgoing, people-focused, food-motivated. Stays mentally puppyish for 2–3 years. Rarely a guard dog — they tend to love everyone.

Trainability

Very high. Eager to please and easy to motivate with food, which is why they're used as service and detection dogs. Great first-timer breed IF you can meet the energy.

With kids & pets

Excellent with both, generally. Big and bouncy when young, so supervise around small children — knock-downs happen by accident, not aggression.

Living situation

Adaptable, but not a low-effort apartment dog unless you're committed to daily hard exercise. They do best with room to move and a job to do.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, easy to brush — but they shed a LOT, year-round, with heavy seasonal blowouts. If shed hair bothers you, know this going in.

Health & costs

Prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, obesity (they will overeat forever), ear infections, and some cancers. Buy from health-tested lines. Keep them lean — it's the #1 thing you control for their longevity.

Best fit

Active individuals or families who want a social, trainable dog and will genuinely exercise it every day.

A note from Kerri

Labs are popular for good reason, but 'easy' is a myth people regret. In daycare, the under-exercised Labs were the ones bouncing off walls. Give them a job and a real workout and they're one of the best dogs on earth. Skip that and you'll spend two years frustrated.
