French Bulldog

Who this breed is NOT for

Budget-tight owners, people in hot climates without AC, anyone wanting a jogging/hiking buddy, or those gone long hours. If a big surprise vet bill would sink you, this is not your breed right now — and please don't buy from anyone breeding for the most extreme flat face.

Bred to do

Companion lapdog — bred purely to be with people, not to work.

Exercise needs

Modest. Short walks and play are plenty. Importantly, they overheat dangerously fast and can't handle heat or hard exercise — a hot day can be life-threatening.

Temperament

Affectionate, comical, stubborn, very attached to their people. Prone to separation distress — they want to be with you constantly.

Trainability

Moderate. Smart but stubborn and easily bored; keep training short and fun. Housetraining can be slow.

With kids & pets

Usually good with both; generally gentle. Supervise with very small kids as with any dog.

Living situation

Great apartment dog — quiet and small. But needs climate control; not a dog for hot homes or hot climates without AC.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, low grooming — but the facial and body wrinkles must be cleaned regularly to prevent infection.

Health & costs

This is the big one. Frenchies are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed with serious, common, expensive health issues: breathing problems (often needing surgery), spinal disease, skin and ear infections, eye problems, and most can't breed or birth naturally. Expect high lifetime vet costs and consider pet insurance from day one. Buy only from a breeder who health-tests and prioritizes breathing and structure over 'extreme' looks.

Best fit

People who want a low-exercise, indoor companion, are home often, and can budget for higher vet care.

A note from Kerri

I have to be honest here because I've seen the vet bills and the breathing crises. Frenchies are wonderful, loving dogs — and they're one of the most medically expensive companions you can choose. Go in with eyes open, insure early, and choose a responsible breeder. Cute cannot be the reason.
