Golden Retriever

Medium-large; 55–75 lbsHigh (especially first 3 years)10–12 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

People wanting a guard dog, a low-shedding dog, or a low-energy couch companion — and anyone gone long hours, since Goldens bond hard and struggle alone.

Bred to do

Retrieving game for hunters — bred to work closely with people, swim, and use their mouth gently.

Exercise needs

High. 1–2 hours of activity daily. Love swimming and fetch. Under-exercised Goldens get anxious and mouthy.

Temperament

Gentle, eager to please, deeply people-oriented, sensitive. One of the most trainable and friendly breeds — and rarely protective.

Trainability

Very high. Soft, willing dogs that respond beautifully to positive training. Excellent for first-timers who can meet the energy.

With kids & pets

Outstanding with both. Patient and tolerant. Still supervise young kids around a bouncy puppy.

Living situation

Best with space and daily exercise; can do a home of any size if the activity needs are truly met.

Grooming & shedding

Long double coat that sheds heavily year-round with big seasonal blowouts. Needs brushing several times a week. This is a real time commitment.

Health & costs

Sadly cancer-prone as a breed, plus hip/elbow dysplasia, heart conditions, and skin/ear issues. Buy from health-tested lines. Keep them lean. Budget for grooming and potential serious illness.

Best fit

Active families or individuals who want an affectionate, trainable companion and can handle heavy shedding and daily exercise.

A note from Kerri

Goldens are as sweet as their reputation, but two things surprise people: the shedding is relentless, and the breed carries a real cancer risk. Neither should scare you off — just prepare for the brushing and choose a breeder who health-tests. A well-raised Golden is a gift.
