Poodle (Standard)

Standard 40–70 lbs; also Miniature and Toy varietiesModerate to high12–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

People who don't want a grooming bill every 4–8 weeks, or who want an aloof, independent dog. Bored Poodles get anxious and mischievous — they need their brains used.

Bred to do

Originally a water retriever (yes, really) — the fancy haircut started as functional. Bred to work and think.

Exercise needs

Moderate to high, plus real mental stimulation. Standards especially need daily exercise and problem-solving. Very athletic despite the elegant look.

Temperament

Highly intelligent, sensitive, playful, people-oriented. Can be reserved with strangers. Thrive on interaction and dislike being ignored.

Trainability

Among the most trainable breeds — quick learners that excel at obedience and dog sports. Great for owners who enjoy training.

With kids & pets

Generally very good, especially Standards. Smaller varieties are more delicate around rough young children.

Living situation

Adaptable across sizes — Toys and Minis suit apartments; Standards want more space and exercise. All want to be with their people.

Grooming & shedding

Low-shedding coat, which is why they're popular with allergy-sensitive homes — but that coat needs professional grooming every 4–8 weeks plus regular home brushing. Grooming is a real ongoing cost, not optional.

Health & costs

Generally healthy but watch for hip dysplasia, eye disorders, epilepsy, and bloat (Standards). Budget the grooming into your monthly costs.

Best fit

Owners who want a smart, low-shedding, trainable dog and will commit to regular professional grooming and mental engagement.

A note from Kerri

People underestimate Poodles because of the haircut — they're one of the smartest, most capable dogs there is. The catch is grooming: that low-shed coat means a standing appointment for the dog's whole life. Factor that money and time in before you fall for one.
