Dachshund

Small; Standard 16–32 lbs, Miniature under 11 lbsModerate12–16 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

People wanting an easy-to-train, quiet dog, homes with rough toddlers, or anyone who won't manage the jumping and weight to protect the spine.

Bred to do

Bred to hunt badgers and burrow into dens — that long body and bold, stubborn streak are the job, not an accident.

Exercise needs

Moderate — daily walks and play. Don't let their small size fool you; they have stamina and a strong prey drive.

Temperament

Bold, curious, stubborn, loyal, often a one-person dog. Big personality in a small body. Can be vocal — many are real barkers.

Trainability

Challenging. Smart but independent and stubborn (they were bred to work alone underground). Housetraining is notoriously slow. Patience and consistency required.

With kids & pets

Better with older, gentle kids than toddlers. Their long backs are fragile and rough handling can injure them. Can be scrappy with strange dogs.

Living situation

Good apartment size, but the barking can be an issue for close neighbors. Protect the back — limit stairs and jumping.

Grooming & shedding

Depends on coat (smooth, long, or wire). Smooth is easy; long and wire need more. Moderate shedding.

Health & costs

The big concern is IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) — that long spine is prone to serious, sometimes surgical, back injury. Keep them lean, discourage jumping off furniture, and use ramps. Also watch dental disease. Insurance is worth considering.

Best fit

Owners who appreciate a bold, funny, characterful dog, will be patient with training, and will protect that back.

A note from Kerri

Dachshunds have huge personalities and I adore them, but two things trip people up: they're stubborn to train, and their backs are a genuine medical risk. Keep them slim, block the furniture leaps, and don't expect a pushover — expect a comedian with opinions.
