Bulldog (English)

Medium; 40–55 lbsLow8–10 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Anyone on a tight vet budget, in a hot climate without AC, or wanting an active outdoor dog. As with any flat-faced breed, don't reward breeders producing the most extreme, least healthy look.

Bred to do

Originally bred for bull-baiting, then reshaped over generations into a stocky companion. The modern Bulldog is a purely companion animal.

Exercise needs

Low — short, gentle walks. Like Frenchies, they overheat dangerously and cannot handle heat or hard exercise. Never exercise them in warm weather.

Temperament

Calm, affectionate, easygoing, stubborn. A true couch companion that adores its people.

Trainability

Low to moderate. Sweet but stubborn; short, positive sessions work best.

With kids & pets

Generally gentle and patient with both — one of their nicest traits.

Living situation

Fine for apartments — low energy and quiet — but must have climate control. Not for hot homes.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, moderate shedding, but the facial wrinkles and tail pocket need regular cleaning to prevent infection.

Health & costs

One of the most health-challenged breeds. Brachycephalic breathing problems, hip and joint issues, skin infections, eye conditions, and most require C-sections to give birth. High lifetime vet costs are the norm — insure early and choose a breeder who prioritizes health and function over extreme features.

Best fit

People who want a mellow, loving, low-exercise companion, are home often, and can budget for significant vet care.

A note from Kerri

Bulldogs are some of the most lovable, gentle dogs I've met — and medically, some of the most fragile and expensive. If you go this route, do it with insurance, a health-focused breeder, and full awareness that heat is a genuine danger to them.
