Beagle

Small-medium; 20–30 lbsHigh12–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

People wanting easy off-leash recall, a quiet dog for a shared wall, or a low-exercise companion. An under-exercised, bored Beagle howls and escapes — that's the breed doing its job in the wrong setting.

Bred to do

Scent hound bred to hunt rabbits in packs — built to follow their nose for miles and work with other dogs.

Exercise needs

High. Need daily, substantial exercise and sniffing time or they get bored, vocal, and destructive. A tired Beagle is a good Beagle.

Temperament

Merry, friendly, curious, food-obsessed, sociable with people and dogs. Also independent and famously led by their nose.

Trainability

Challenging. Very food-motivated (helps) but easily distracted by scent and independent by nature. Recall is hard — that nose overrides you. Often must stay leashed or fenced.

With kids & pets

Excellent with both — pack dogs that love company. One of the more kid-friendly, dog-friendly breeds.

Living situation

Adaptable in size, but they BAY and howl — a real consideration for apartments and close neighbors. Need a secure yard; they'll follow a scent right out of an open gate.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, easy grooming, moderate shedding. Check those long ears regularly for infection.

Health & costs

Generally hardy. Watch weight closely (they will eat endlessly), ear infections, and some eye and back issues. Keeping them lean is a daily discipline.

Best fit

Active, patient owners who want a friendly, sociable dog, have a secure yard, and won't be undone by a vocal, nose-driven personality.

A note from Kerri

Beagles are joyful, friendly dogs, but two realities catch people off guard: the nose beats your commands almost every time, so off-leash freedom is rarely safe, and they're loud. Give them exercise, secure fencing, and patience, and you'll have a wonderful, happy companion.
