Cocker Spaniel

Small-medium; 20–30 lbsModerate to high12–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Anyone unwilling to commit to grooming and ear maintenance, gone long hours, or wanting a low-maintenance coat.

Bred to do

A bird-hunting spaniel — bred to flush and retrieve game birds. Merry, active, and people-oriented.

Exercise needs

Moderate to high — daily walks, play, and sniffing time. More active than their gentle looks suggest.

Temperament

Sweet, affectionate, merry, and eager to please — a classic gentle family dog. Can be sensitive and prone to separation distress; some lines are more excitable.

Trainability

High — soft, willing, and food-motivated. Responds beautifully to gentle, positive training; harsh handling backfires with this sensitive breed.

With kids & pets

Generally very good with both — gentle and friendly. A solid family choice.

Living situation

Adaptable, including apartments, if exercised. Wants company; struggles alone for long. Keep those long ears clean and dry.

Grooming & shedding

Beautiful silky coat that mats easily — needs regular brushing and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks. A real grooming commitment.

Health & costs

Watch chronic ear infections (those long, low ears), eye conditions (cherry eye, cataracts, glaucoma), luxating patellas, and some heart and autoimmune issues. Budget grooming plus ear/eye care.

Best fit

People and families wanting a sweet, affectionate, moderately active companion who'll keep up with grooming and ear care and won't leave them alone all day.

A note from Kerri

Cockers are lovely, sweet-natured dogs — gentle and devoted. Two things to plan for: the coat needs regular professional grooming, and those gorgeous low ears are magnets for infection, so ear care is a lifelong routine. Sensitive souls — train them kindly.
