Rottweiler

Large; 80–135 lbsModerate to high9–10 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

First-time owners, anyone who won't commit to serious training and socialization, or those who can't physically manage or responsibly contain a strong 100-lb dog. In the wrong hands this breed's strength and protectiveness become a liability — that's an owner failure.

Bred to do

Ancient drover and guardian breed — bred to move cattle and protect people and property. Confident, powerful working dog.

Exercise needs

Moderate to high — daily exercise plus training and mental work. A powerful, smart dog that needs an outlet and a job.

Temperament

Confident, calm, loyal, naturally protective and reserved with strangers, deeply devoted to their family. Needs a calm, consistent, experienced owner.

Trainability

High — intelligent and willing with a fair leader — but the combination of power and protectiveness makes early, thorough socialization and training essential, not optional.

With kids & pets

Often loving and gentle with their own family and kids when well-raised, but their size and strength demand supervision. Early socialization with other dogs is critical.

Living situation

Best with space and an experienced, present owner. Some areas have breed restrictions and insurance issues — check before you commit.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, easy grooming, but sheds more than people expect, with seasonal peaks.

Health & costs

Prone to hip/elbow dysplasia, heart conditions, bloat, and a higher cancer risk with a shorter average lifespan. Buy from health-tested lines and learn the signs of bloat. Budget for a big dog's costs.

Best fit

Experienced, confident owners who will invest heavily in socialization and training and can handle a large, powerful, protective dog responsibly.

A note from Kerri

A well-raised Rottweiler is steady, loyal, and wonderful — I've known some of the gentlest dogs of this breed. But the size, strength, and guarding instinct mean the stakes of getting it wrong are high. This is a dog that demands an owner who leads calmly and does the training work. Respect that and it's an incredible companion.
