Border Collie

Medium; 30–55 lbsExtremely high12–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Almost everyone who wants a 'pet' in the ordinary sense. First-timers, busy families, apartment dwellers, and anyone who can't provide hours of daily physical and mental work. A bored Border Collie is a genuinely unhappy, often neurotic dog.

Bred to do

The premier livestock herding dog — bred to work sheep all day using intense focus, stamina, and problem-solving. Widely considered the most intelligent dog breed.

Exercise needs

Extreme, and mental work is even more important than physical. Walks alone will never be enough — they need jobs, training, dog sports, and problem-solving daily, for life.

Temperament

Brilliant, intense, driven, sensitive, workaholic. Focused to the point of obsession. Can be reserved with strangers and highly reactive to movement.

Trainability

The highest — they learn astonishingly fast. But that brain is a double-edged sword: without constant engagement they invent obsessive or destructive behaviors (chasing lights, shadows, cars, tails).

With kids & pets

Can be good with an active family, but the herding drive means chasing and heel-nipping at running children, bikes, and other pets. Needs channeling.

Living situation

Poorly suited to apartments or sedentary homes. Thrives with space, a job, and an owner who lives and breathes activity.

Grooming & shedding

Medium double coat, moderate to heavy shedding, needs regular brushing.

Health & costs

Watch for hip dysplasia, eye disorders (Collie eye anomaly), epilepsy, and the MDR1 drug-sensitivity gene — ask your vet about testing. Buy from health-tested lines.

Best fit

Dedicated, active owners — dog-sport competitors, farmers, serious hikers — who want a working partner and will engage its mind every single day.

A note from Kerri

I say this plainly: the Border Collie is too much dog for most homes, and that's not an insult to you or the dog. They are magnificent working animals that need a job. If you're not ready to essentially have a part-time athletic and training commitment for 12+ years, please admire them from a distance and choose a calmer breed.
