Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Small; 24–30 lbsModerate to high12–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

People wanting a quiet, low-shedding lapdog, or anyone who won't manage the weight and back health. That 'internet-famous cute' hides a real working temperament.

Bred to do

A herding dog — despite the short legs, bred to move cattle by nipping at their heels. Yes, that big personality is a working dog in a small body.

Exercise needs

More than people expect — daily walks and play. They're active and sturdy, not lapdogs, and they gain weight easily if under-exercised.

Temperament

Bold, smart, affectionate, alert, and often vocal. Big-dog attitude, strong herding instinct, and a tendency to bark and 'boss.'

Trainability

High — clever and food-motivated — but independent and can be stubborn. Training helps curb the barking and heel-nipping.

With kids & pets

Generally good, but the herding instinct means they may nip at the heels of running children and pets. Early training channels it.

Living situation

Adaptable, including apartments, if exercised — but the barking is a real consideration for shared walls. Protect the long back from stairs and jumping.

Grooming & shedding

Double coat that sheds a LOT for a small dog, year-round, with heavy seasonal shedding. Regular brushing needed.

Health & costs

Prone to back problems (IVDD) due to the long spine, hip dysplasia, obesity, and degenerative myelopathy. Keep them lean and limit jumping.

Best fit

Active owners who want a smart, sturdy, characterful small dog and won't be surprised by shedding, barking, and a herding streak.

A note from Kerri

Corgis are having a moment because they're adorable and meme-famous, and people are shocked to meet a loud, shedding, opinionated herding dog underneath. They're wonderful for the right active home — just don't mistake short legs for low needs.
