Goldendoodle
Who this breed is NOT for
Anyone told it 'won't shed' or is 'hypoallergenic' (not guaranteed), who won't budget for grooming every 6–8 weeks, or who's gone long hours. 'Designer' does not mean low-maintenance.
Bred to do
A cross of Golden Retriever and Poodle — bred as a friendly, family companion, ideally with a lower-shedding coat. Both parents are people-focused working breeds.
Exercise needs
Moderate to high — both parent breeds are active. Daily walks plus play and some training. Under-exercised Goldendoodles get bouncy and mouthy.
Temperament
Friendly, social, affectionate, eager to please — often a wonderful family dog. Genetics vary, so energy and coat differ between individuals; meet the parents.
Trainability
High — both parents are smart and biddable, so they usually train easily and love it.
With kids & pets
Generally excellent with both — one of the main reasons they're popular family dogs. Supervise a bouncy pup around small kids.
Living situation
Adaptable by size, but most do best with space and daily activity, and all want to be with their people (prone to separation distress).
Grooming & shedding
NOT guaranteed non-shedding or hypoallergenic — coat type varies. Most need brushing several times a week and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks or they mat. Grooming is a real, ongoing, non-optional cost.
Health & costs
Can inherit issues from either parent — hip dysplasia, eye conditions, ear infections, and some cancers (Golden side). Insist on a breeder who health-tests BOTH parent breeds; many doodle breeders don't. Budget for grooming plus vet care.
Best fit
Active families or individuals who want a friendly, trainable companion and can commit to serious grooming and a health-testing breeder.

A note from Kerri
Goldendoodles are lovely, but I see the fallout of the marketing constantly — people promised a non-shedding, easy dog who end up with an energetic dog, a matting coat, and a big grooming bill. Go in knowing the coat varies, grooming is mandatory, and a good breeder health-tests both sides.
