Labradoodle

Varies; Mini ~15–30 lbs, Standard 50–65 lbsHigh12–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

People wanting a calm or guaranteed non-shedding dog, anyone who won't keep up with grooming and exercise, or those gone long hours.

Bred to do

A cross of Labrador Retriever and Poodle — originally bred hoping to combine a Lab's temperament with a lower-shedding coat. Both parents are active working breeds.

Exercise needs

High — Labs and Poodles are both athletic. Expect real daily exercise plus play; many love water. Under-exercised Labradoodles get destructive.

Temperament

Friendly, energetic, playful, people-oriented. Often a bit more bouncy and robust than a Goldendoodle. Coat and energy vary by individual — meet the parents.

Trainability

High — smart and food-motivated from both sides, usually easy and fun to train.

With kids & pets

Generally excellent with both — sociable and tolerant. Supervise an exuberant young dog around small children.

Living situation

Best with space and an active owner. Adaptable by size but not a low-effort apartment dog unless truly exercised.

Grooming & shedding

NOT guaranteed non-shedding or hypoallergenic — coat varies (fleece, wool, or hair). Most need frequent brushing and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks. Grooming is a real ongoing cost.

Health & costs

Can inherit hip/elbow dysplasia, eye conditions, ear infections, and more. Demand a breeder who health-tests BOTH parent breeds. Budget grooming plus vet care.

Best fit

Active families or individuals who want a fun, trainable, energetic companion and will commit to exercise, grooming, and a health-testing breeder.

A note from Kerri

Labradoodles are a lot of happy, bouncy dog — wonderful for an active home, frustrating for a quiet one. Same warning as all the doodles: 'hypoallergenic' isn't guaranteed, grooming is real money, and the breeder's health testing matters more than the label.
