Bernedoodle

Varies; Mini ~25–49 lbs, Standard 70–90+ lbsModerate10–15 years (smaller ones live longer) lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

People wanting a low-grooming or low-cost dog, hot climates without AC for the big coated ones, or anyone expecting 'calm' as a guarantee.

Bred to do

A cross of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle — bred for an affectionate, often calmer family companion with a lower-shedding coat.

Exercise needs

Moderate — daily walks and play. Often a bit more laid-back than Golden/Labradoodles, but the Standards are big and still need real activity.

Temperament

Affectionate, loyal, often gentle and a little goofy. Can be reserved with strangers and, from the Bernese side, sometimes stubborn as pups. Bonds deeply to family.

Trainability

Moderate to high — smart from the Poodle side, occasionally stubborn from the Bernese side; early, patient training pays off.

With kids & pets

Usually excellent — known as gentle, patient family dogs. Supervise around small kids given the potential size.

Living situation

Standards want space; minis adapt better to smaller homes. All want to be with their people. Heavy coats mean heat sensitivity.

Grooming & shedding

Thick, often wavy/curly coat — NOT guaranteed non-shedding. Heavy grooming needs: frequent brushing and professional grooming, or it mats badly. A big grooming commitment, especially at Standard size.

Health & costs

The Bernese side carries real concerns — higher cancer risk and joint issues — though the Poodle cross can improve the odds. Also watch hips and eyes. Health-test BOTH parents. Big dogs cost more across the board.

Best fit

Families wanting an affectionate, calmer-than-average large doodle who can handle heavy grooming and a bigger dog's costs.

A note from Kerri

Bernedoodles are some of the sweetest of the doodles and often mellower — but that Bernese blood brings a big coat, big costs, and some real health risks to plan for. If you want one, the breeder's health testing on both parents is everything.
