Cockapoo

Small; ~12–25 lbsModerate13–16 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Anyone gone long hours (they bond hard), or who won't commit to grooming and ear maintenance.

Bred to do

A cross of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle — one of the oldest 'designer' crosses. Bred as a small, cheerful, affectionate companion.

Exercise needs

Moderate — daily walks and play are plenty. Adaptable little dogs, happy to be active or to cuddle.

Temperament

Affectionate, happy, sociable, people-oriented. Generally easygoing and a good fit for many households. Dislikes being left alone for long.

Trainability

High — smart and eager to please; usually one of the easier small doodles to train.

With kids & pets

Generally very good with both — friendly and gentle. Supervise with very young kids as with any small dog.

Living situation

Great for apartments or houses — small and adaptable. Main need is company; prone to separation distress.

Grooming & shedding

Low-shedding for many but NOT guaranteed; coat varies. Needs regular brushing and professional grooming every few weeks. Watch the Cocker-side ears for infection — keep them clean and dry.

Health & costs

Watch ear infections, eye conditions, luxating patellas, and dental disease. Health-test both parents. Long-lived, so a long commitment; budget grooming.

Best fit

People — including first-timers, families, and smaller homes — who want an affectionate, adaptable small companion and will keep up with grooming and ear care.

A note from Kerri

Cockapoos are one of the more genuinely easygoing doodles and a solid pick for many homes. Just stay on top of those spaniel ears and the grooming, and don't leave them alone all day — they're companions to their core.
