Cavapoo (Cavoodle)

Small; ~9–25 lbsLow to moderate12–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Anyone gone long hours, or unwilling to vet the breeder's health testing given the Cavalier heart risks. Sweet dog, real medical homework required.

Bred to do

A cross of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle — bred as a gentle, affectionate small companion.

Exercise needs

Low to moderate — short walks and play. Adaptable and happy to be a lap companion, but still needs daily movement.

Temperament

Gentle, sweet, affectionate, sociable with everyone — one of the friendliest small crosses. Bonds closely and dislikes being alone.

Trainability

High — soft, willing, and food-motivated; a good first-timer temperament.

With kids & pets

Excellent with both — gentle and patient. Supervise with very young children given the small size.

Living situation

Great for apartments and families alike; very adaptable. Main need is company — they struggle alone for long stretches.

Grooming & shedding

Usually low-shedding but NOT guaranteed; soft coat needs regular brushing and professional grooming to prevent matting.

Health & costs

Watch the Cavalier-side risks especially — heart disease (mitral valve) and neurological issues — plus eyes, ears, and patellas. Demand a breeder who health-tests BOTH parents, particularly cardiac. Budget for possible vet care.

Best fit

People wanting a gentle, affectionate, low-to-moderate-energy small companion who are home often and will source from a health-testing breeder.

A note from Kerri

Cavapoos are as gentle and lovable as small dogs come — wonderful companions. My one firm caution is the Cavalier heart line: the single most important decision is a breeder who cardiac-tests the parents. Don't skip that.
