Boxer

Medium-large; 50–80 lbsHigh10–12 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Sedentary or long-hours-away owners, hot climates without care, or anyone wanting a calm, low-maintenance dog. A bored, under-exercised Boxer is a wrecking ball.

Bred to do

A working and guardian breed — bred for strength, agility, and protection, but with a famously playful, clownish streak.

Exercise needs

High. Daily vigorous exercise and play, plus mental engagement. Boxers stay puppyish and bouncy for years and get destructive when bored.

Temperament

Playful, affectionate, loyal, goofy, and deeply people-bonded. Protective but usually friendly. Exuberant — they lean, jump, and 'kidney-bean' dance when happy.

Trainability

Moderate to high — smart and eager but easily distracted and stubborn during their long adolescence. Consistent, positive training and early socialization matter.

With kids & pets

Great with kids — patient and playful — but their bounce can bowl over toddlers. Early socialization needed with other dogs; some can be same-sex reactive.

Living situation

Best with space and an active owner. Brachycephalic-leaning face means real heat sensitivity — avoid exercise in hot weather.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, easy grooming, moderate shedding. Wipe facial wrinkles; some drool.

Health & costs

A higher-risk breed for cancer, plus heart conditions (boxer cardiomyopathy), hip dysplasia, and bloat. Buy from health-tested lines and budget for potential serious vet care.

Best fit

Active families or individuals who want an affectionate, playful, protective companion and can meet the energy and training needs.

A note from Kerri

Boxers are the class clowns of the dog world — joyful, loving, and a lot. People underestimate how long they stay bouncy and how much exercise they need. Give them that plus early training, and they're devoted, hilarious family dogs. Just plan for the cancer risk with a good breeder.
