Cane Corso

Large-giant; 88–120 lbsModerate to high9–12 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

First-time owners, anyone who can't physically manage or contain a 100+ lb protective dog, or those unwilling to commit to serious training. In the wrong hands this is a liability — that's an owner failure, not the breed's.

Bred to do

An ancient Italian mastiff-type guardian — bred to protect property and livestock. Powerful, confident, and naturally protective.

Exercise needs

Moderate to high — daily exercise plus training and a job. A powerful working guardian that needs an outlet and structure.

Temperament

Confident, loyal, intelligent, intensely devoted to family, and naturally wary and protective of strangers and territory. Needs a calm, experienced, assertive owner.

Trainability

High — smart and willing with a fair leader — but the combination of size, power, and guarding instinct makes extensive early socialization and training absolutely essential.

With kids & pets

Can be loving and gentle with their own family and kids when well-raised, but their size and protectiveness demand experienced handling and careful socialization with other animals.

Living situation

Needs space, secure containment, and an experienced owner who's present. Frequently faces breed restrictions and insurance issues — check before committing.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, easy grooming, moderate shedding. Some drool.

Health & costs

Watch for hip/elbow dysplasia, bloat, heart conditions, and eyelid issues. Large size means higher costs across the board. Buy from a responsible, health-testing, temperament-focused breeder.

Best fit

Experienced, confident owners with space who will invest heavily in socialization and training and can responsibly manage a large guardian breed.

A note from Kerri

The Cane Corso is a magnificent, deeply loyal guardian — and one of the breeds I most worry about landing in unprepared hands. This is a serious dog for a serious, experienced owner. If that's not you yet, admire them and choose something more forgiving; the stakes of getting a dog this powerful wrong are high.
