Pug

Small; 14–18 lbsLow12–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Budget-tight owners, hot climates without AC, active outdoorsy people, or anyone who won't keep them lean and manage the wrinkles and eyes.

Bred to do

An ancient Chinese companion breed — bred purely to be a charming, affectionate lapdog for royalty.

Exercise needs

Low — short walks and play. Importantly, they overheat dangerously fast and cannot handle heat or hard exercise. A warm day can be life-threatening.

Temperament

Charming, affectionate, comical, sociable, and people-obsessed. A true companion that wants to be with you constantly. Can be stubborn.

Trainability

Moderate — smart but stubborn and food-motivated (watch the weight). Housetraining is often slow. Keep training short and fun.

With kids & pets

Generally excellent with both — friendly, patient, and sturdy-ish. A good family companion.

Living situation

Ideal apartment and senior-friendly dog — small, low-energy, indoor-loving. Must have climate control; extremely heat-sensitive.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat but they SHED a surprising amount for a small dog. Clean the facial wrinkles regularly to prevent infection.

Health & costs

A severely brachycephalic breed with serious, common health issues: breathing difficulties, eye problems (prone to painful ulcers and even prolapse), skin fold infections, obesity, and spinal issues. Expect real lifetime vet costs; consider insurance. Choose a breeder prioritizing better breathing and less extreme features.

Best fit

People wanting a low-energy, affectionate indoor companion — including seniors and apartment dwellers — who can budget for vet care and protect them from heat.

A note from Kerri

Pugs are irresistibly charming and wonderful companions — and among the most health-compromised breeds out there. If you want one, insure early, keep them slim, protect them from heat, and please support breeders working toward healthier, less extreme faces. Cute cannot be the whole reason.
