Pomeranian

Toy; 3–7 lbsModerate12–16 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Homes with young rough children, anyone wanting a quiet dog, or those who won't keep up with coat care and dental health, or who'd treat it as an accessory instead of a dog.

Bred to do

A tiny spitz-type companion, descended from larger sled dogs — bred down into a bold, fluffy lapdog.

Exercise needs

Moderate for their size — short walks and play. Lively and curious; they need real engagement, not just to be carried.

Temperament

Bold, lively, alert, confident, and often vocal. Big personality in a tiny body. Can be bossy and bark a lot; loyal and affectionate with their person.

Trainability

Moderate — smart but independent and easily spoiled. Prone to 'small dog syndrome' if not trained and socialized like a real dog. Barking needs managing.

With kids & pets

Better with older, gentle children — they're fragile and can be snappy if handled roughly or frightened. Fine with calm other pets.

Living situation

Great apartment size, but barking is a real consideration for neighbors. Sensitive to heat under that thick coat; use a harness (delicate trachea).

Grooming & shedding

Thick double coat that needs regular brushing and sheds; benefits from occasional professional grooming. Never shave the coat.

Health & costs

Watch for dental disease (critical in toys — budget cleanings), luxating patellas, collapsing trachea (use a harness), and heart issues. Long-lived, so a long commitment.

Best fit

Owners who want a bold, fluffy, characterful small companion and will actually train, socialize, and groom the dog.

A note from Kerri

Poms are tiny dogs with enormous personalities — spirited, funny, and devoted. The mistakes I see: under-training them into yappy little tyrants, and neglecting teeth and knees. Treat them like a real dog, mind the trachea with a harness, stay on the dental care, and they're delightful for well over a decade.
