Miniature Schnauzer

Small; 11–20 lbsModerate to high12–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

People wanting a quiet, low-maintenance, low-grooming lapdog, or who won't engage a busy, clever little mind.

Bred to do

A German farm ratter — bred to hunt vermin. That alert, feisty, busy terrier-adjacent temperament is the job.

Exercise needs

Moderate to high — daily walks, play, and mental stimulation. More energetic and busy-minded than people expect from a small dog.

Temperament

Smart, spirited, alert, affectionate, and often vocal (good watchdogs — they bark). Bold and busy; loyal and people-oriented.

Trainability

High — very intelligent and trainable, and one of the smarter small breeds — but that brain needs engagement, and the barking needs training.

With kids & pets

Generally good with both, especially when socialized. Sturdier than many small breeds. Prey drive means care around small pets.

Living situation

Adaptable, including apartments, if exercised — but the barking is a real neighbor consideration. Low-shedding coat suits some allergy-sensitive homes.

Grooming & shedding

Low-shedding wiry coat, but high-maintenance: needs professional grooming every 5–8 weeks plus regular brushing. Grooming is a real ongoing cost.

Health & costs

Watch for pancreatitis (keep them lean and low-fat), high cholesterol/lipid issues, bladder stones, dental disease, and eye conditions. Budget grooming plus vet care.

Best fit

Active owners who want a smart, spirited, low-shedding small dog and will commit to grooming, training, and managing the barking.

A note from Kerri

Mini Schnauzers are sharp, spirited little dogs — more terrier-busy than lap-dog than folks expect. Great companions for an engaged owner, but budget for the regular grooming, train the barking early, and watch the diet — this breed is prone to pancreatitis, so no fatty table scraps.
