Bernese Mountain Dog

Large; 70–115 lbsModerate7–10 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Hot climates, people gone long hours, tight budgets, or anyone who couldn't bear a short life expectancy and real cancer risk.

Bred to do

A Swiss farm dog — bred to pull carts, drove cattle, and guard the homestead. Sturdy, gentle, and hardworking.

Exercise needs

Moderate — daily walks and play. Sturdy but not high-endurance; protect joints while young. Loves cool weather, struggles in heat.

Temperament

Gentle, affectionate, calm, loyal, and eager to please. A devoted family dog that bonds hard and dislikes being alone. Can be a bit reserved with strangers.

Trainability

Moderate to high — sensitive and willing; responds to gentle, positive training. Slow to mature.

With kids & pets

Excellent with both — patient, tolerant, and gentle giants. Supervise around toddlers given the size.

Living situation

Best with space and a cool climate; heavy coat means real heat sensitivity. Wants to be with family, not left alone.

Grooming & shedding

Thick long double coat that sheds heavily year-round with big seasonal blows. Regular brushing required.

Health & costs

The hard part: a heartbreakingly short lifespan and a high cancer risk, plus hip/elbow dysplasia and bloat. Buy from health-tested lines and prepare, emotionally and financially, for a big dog with too few years.

Best fit

Families wanting a gentle, affectionate large companion, with space, a cooler climate, and readiness for heavy shedding and a short life.

A note from Kerri

Berners are as sweet and gentle as dogs come — wonderful family dogs. The heartbreak is the lifespan and cancer risk; you get too few years and you must choose a health-testing breeder. Go in with your eyes open and love every minute.
