English Springer Spaniel

Medium; 40–50 lbsHigh12–14 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Sedentary homes, long-hours-away owners, or anyone wanting a calm, low-energy dog. A bored Springer is a bouncing, mischievous handful.

Bred to do

A hardworking gun dog — bred to flush ('spring') and retrieve game, all day, in the field. Athletic and tireless.

Exercise needs

High — needs substantial daily exercise plus mental stimulation. A working field breed that gets restless and destructive without an outlet.

Temperament

Friendly, affectionate, eager, and enthusiastic — a happy, people-focused dog that wants to be involved in everything. Very bonded; dislikes being alone.

Trainability

High — smart, biddable, and food-motivated; excels at training and dog sports. Needs a job for that energy.

With kids & pets

Excellent with both — friendly, playful, and tolerant. A great active-family dog.

Living situation

Best with an active owner and space; not suited to a sedentary or long-hours-away home. Keep the ears clean.

Grooming & shedding

Medium feathered coat that sheds and needs regular brushing plus some trimming/grooming. Moderate upkeep.

Health & costs

Watch ear infections, hip dysplasia, eye conditions, and some autoimmune issues. Buy from health- and temperament-tested lines (some poorly-bred lines have temperament issues).

Best fit

Active individuals or families who want an affectionate, trainable, enthusiastic companion and will genuinely exercise and engage it.

A note from Kerri

Springers are joyful, eager, do-it-all dogs — fantastic for an active family, frustrating for a quiet one. They need real exercise and a job. Choose a reputable breeder for temperament, keep those ears clean, and give them work — they thrive on it.
