Vizsla

Who this breed is NOT for

Sedentary people, anyone gone long hours (separation anxiety is real), or those wanting an independent, low-key dog. Under-exercised and left alone, a Vizsla unravels.

Bred to do

A Hungarian pointer-retriever — bred to hunt all day and stay close to the hunter. Athletic, tireless, and intensely people-bonded.

Exercise needs

Very high — needs vigorous daily exercise (running, not just walking) plus mental work. One of the most demanding breeds for energy and companionship.

Temperament

Affectionate, energetic, sensitive, and famously clingy — the 'velcro Vizsla.' Craves constant human contact and activity; prone to separation anxiety.

Trainability

High — smart, eager, and sensitive; responds to gentle, positive training and falls apart under harshness. Needs consistency and engagement.

With kids & pets

Great with active families and generally good with other dogs. Their energy can overwhelm small children; supervise.

Living situation

Best with a very active owner who is home a lot. Short coat means they get cold; they burrow under blankets. Not a leave-alone dog.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, low grooming, moderate shedding.

Health & costs

Generally healthy. Watch for hip dysplasia, epilepsy, some cancers, and allergies. Buy from health-tested lines.

Best fit

Highly active owners — runners, hunters, hikers — who are home a lot and want a devoted, athletic shadow.

A note from Kerri

Vizslas are gorgeous, loving, and utterly devoted — and one of the most demanding dogs I know on two fronts: they need enormous exercise AND near-constant company. Perfect for an active person who's home a lot; miserable (and destructive) for anyone else. Know that before you fall for the looks.
