Weimaraner

Large; 55–90 lbsVery high10–13 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

First-timers, sedentary homes, long-hours-away owners, or homes with small pets. A bored, lonely Weimaraner is a large, anxious, destructive problem.

Bred to do

A German hunting dog — bred to hunt big and small game and stay glued to the hunter. Powerful, athletic, and intense.

Exercise needs

Very high — needs vigorous daily exercise plus mental work. A powerful, driven athlete; without an outlet, destructive and anxious.

Temperament

Loyal, energetic, bold, and intensely people-bonded (the 'grey ghost' is a velcro dog too). Can be strong-willed and prone to separation anxiety and, without training, mischief.

Trainability

High — smart and capable — but the energy, stubbornness, and strength demand experienced, consistent training and early socialization.

With kids & pets

Can be a good family dog with an active household, but the size and energy can overwhelm small kids, and the strong prey drive means caution with cats and small pets.

Living situation

Best with a very active, experienced owner and space. Short coat, gets cold. Not a dog to leave alone for long.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, low grooming, moderate shedding.

Health & costs

Watch for bloat (deep-chested — learn the signs), hip dysplasia, and some hereditary issues. Buy from health-tested lines.

Best fit

Experienced, very active owners who want a powerful, devoted hunting-athlete companion and can meet high exercise, training, and companionship needs.

A note from Kerri

Weimaraners are striking and deeply loyal — and a serious commitment. They pair very high energy with strong attachment and real strength, so they need an experienced, active owner who's around. Beautiful dogs, but not a casual choice, and not for a quiet household.
