Maltese

Toy; 4–7 lbsLow to moderate12–15 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Homes with young rough children, anyone gone long hours, or who won't commit to grooming and dental care.

Bred to do

An ancient companion breed — bred purely to be a gentle, devoted lapdog. Centuries of companionship in the genes.

Exercise needs

Low to moderate — short walks and indoor play. A true companion dog, happy to be near you.

Temperament

Gentle, affectionate, playful, and people-devoted. Bonds closely and dislikes being alone; can be a bit bold and yappy. Charming and gentle overall.

Trainability

Moderate — smart and willing but can be stubborn, and housetraining is often slow (common in toys). Kind, consistent training and socialization prevent 'small dog syndrome.'

With kids & pets

Best with older, gentle children — they're delicate and can be injured by rough handling. Fine with calm other pets.

Living situation

Ideal apartment and companion dog — tiny, adaptable, indoor-loving. Needs company; struggles alone for long. Use a harness (delicate).

Grooming & shedding

Low-shedding but the long white silky coat is high-maintenance — daily brushing if kept long, or regular grooming (many keep a short 'puppy cut'). Tear-staining needs managing.

Health & costs

Watch dental disease (critical in toys — budget cleanings), luxating patellas, collapsing trachea (harness, not collar), and low blood sugar in tiny pups. Long commitment.

Best fit

People — including seniors, apartment dwellers, and gentler homes — wanting an affectionate, portable companion who'll keep up with grooming and dental care.

A note from Kerri

Maltese are sweet, devoted little companions — lovely for a calm home or a senior. Just know the white coat is a real grooming commitment, the teeth need regular care, and they don't like being left alone. Treat them like a real dog, not an ornament, and they're delightful.
