Bichon Frise

Small; 10–18 lbsModerate13–16 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Anyone unwilling to pay for frequent grooming, gone long hours, or wanting a low-maintenance, quiet dog.

Bred to do

A cheerful bichon-type companion — bred to charm and entertain as a lapdog (and once a circus performer). Made to be with people.

Exercise needs

Moderate — daily walks and play. Bouncy and playful but easily satisfied; adaptable.

Temperament

Cheerful, affectionate, playful, and sociable — a happy, gentle, people-loving little dog. Bonds closely; dislikes being alone. Can be barky.

Trainability

Moderate to high — smart and eager to please, but housetraining can be slow (common in small breeds). Positive training and socialization work well.

With kids & pets

Very good with both — friendly, gentle, and playful. A nice family and first-timer choice.

Living situation

Great apartment and family dog — small, adaptable, indoor-loving. Wants company; prone to separation distress.

Grooming & shedding

Low-shedding (popular with allergy-sensitive homes) but the fluffy white coat is high-maintenance — regular brushing and professional grooming every 4–6 weeks, or it mats. Tear-staining needs managing.

Health & costs

Watch allergies and skin issues, luxating patellas, dental disease, bladder stones, and eye conditions. Budget grooming plus vet care.

Best fit

Families, first-timers, and apartment dwellers wanting a cheerful, low-shedding companion who'll commit to regular grooming and company.

A note from Kerri

Bichons are happy, affectionate little charmers and a good low-shedding option — but 'low-shedding' is not 'low-maintenance.' That fluffy coat needs professional grooming every month or so, and they want company. Budget the grooming, keep them company, and they're delightful.
