Belgian Malinois

Medium–large; 40–80 lbsExtremely high12–16 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

First-time owners, families wanting a pet, apartment dwellers, or anyone who thinks a couple of walks is enough. This is arguably the most demanding breed a normal household can encounter.

Bred to do

A Belgian herding dog now used worldwide as the top police, military, and protection dog — bred for drive, athleticism, and relentless focus on a job.

Exercise needs

Extreme, and mental work matters as much as physical. Long runs plus daily training, scent work, or protection/sport work — not just walks. A Malinois without a job finds one you won't like.

Temperament

Intense, driven, brilliant, and deeply bonded to its person. Alert, sensitive, and always 'on.' Strong protective and prey drives.

Trainability

Exceptional — they live to work and learn fast. But that intensity needs an experienced, consistent handler who can channel it; in the wrong hands it becomes reactivity and anxiety.

With kids & pets

Can be devoted to its family, but the herding and prey drive means nipping at running kids and chasing smaller pets. Needs heavy socialization and supervision.

Living situation

Poorly suited to apartments or quiet homes. Needs space, structure, a job, and an owner whose life revolves around the dog's activity.

Grooming & shedding

Short double coat, easy grooming, but sheds steadily with heavier seasonal blowouts.

Health & costs

Generally hardy for its size. Watch for hip and elbow dysplasia and eye issues; buy from health-tested working lines. The real cost is time and training, not vet bills.

Best fit

Experienced, highly active handlers — dog-sport competitors, working-dog homes, people who want a true working partner and will train daily for life.

A note from Kerri

I love a good Malinois, but I turn people away from them more than almost any breed. They are not German Shepherds 'but faster' — they are a working tool with an engine that never idles. If you're not building your daily life around this dog, please, choose something else. An under-worked Mal is a heartbreak for everyone.
