German Shorthaired Pointer

Medium–large; 45–70 lbsVery high10–14 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Sedentary homes, long-workday households, or anyone hoping a walk around the block will do. Bored GSPs are famous escape artists and counter-surfers.

Bred to do

An all-purpose German gundog bred to point, retrieve, and track on land and water — a versatile hunting athlete with tremendous stamina.

Exercise needs

Very high — needs real running exercise daily, not just a stroll. Best with an owner who runs, bikes, hunts, or does dog sports. Under-exercised, they become frantic and destructive.

Temperament

Energetic, affectionate, biddable, and people-loving. 'Velcro' dogs that want to be with you. Enthusiastic to the point of clumsy when young.

Trainability

High — smart, eager, and food-motivated, which makes them a joy to train for an active owner. They do need a job for that brain.

With kids & pets

Great with active families and other dogs. Strong prey drive means caution around cats and small pets; the bouncy energy can overwhelm toddlers.

Living situation

Not an apartment dog unless you're seriously athletic. Thrives with a yard and, more importantly, daily hard exercise and companionship.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, low grooming, but sheds more than people expect — the short hairs weave into everything.

Health & costs

Generally healthy and athletic. Watch for hip dysplasia, bloat (learn the signs), and ear infections. Buy from health-tested lines.

Best fit

Active, outdoorsy people and hunters who want an affectionate, trainable partner and can give hard daily exercise for a decade-plus.

A note from Kerri

GSPs are wonderful — sweet, smart, and up for anything — but their energy is no joke. I only recommend them to people who are genuinely active and honest about it. If your idea of exercise is a leisurely evening walk, this dog will out-run your good intentions by week two.
