Saint Bernard

Giant; 120–180 lbsLow–moderate8–10 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Hot climates, small or tidy homes, tight budgets, or anyone unwilling to train a giant while it's still small enough to teach.

Bred to do

An Alpine rescue and working dog bred by monks to find and warm travelers lost in the snow — enormous, calm, and steady.

Exercise needs

Moderate — daily walks and space, but low endurance. They overheat fast and shouldn't be pushed, especially when young while joints develop.

Temperament

Gentle, friendly, patient, and calm — a mellow giant that's devoted to family. Watchful but rarely aggressive.

Trainability

Moderate — willing and food-motivated, but early training is non-negotiable: an untrained 160-lb dog can't be managed. Start manners as a puppy.

With kids & pets

Wonderful and tolerant, but sheer size means an accidental bump flattens a toddler — supervise young children closely.

Living situation

Needs space and cool air. Adaptable in temperament, but everything about their size (space, food, beds, vet doses) is XL. Not for hot climates.

Grooming & shedding

Heavy coat (rough or smooth), heavy shedding, and significant drool. Regular brushing; keep a drool towel handy.

Health & costs

Giant-breed issues: short lifespan, hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, heart conditions, and eye problems (entropion). Care and food cost far more; insurance recommended.

Best fit

Families with space and budget who want a calm, affectionate giant and can handle drool, shedding, and a short life expectancy.

A note from Kerri

Saints are lovely, mellow, deeply affectionate dogs — but this is a giant-breed commitment in every sense: the food bill, the drool, the vet costs, and the too-few years. Go in with open eyes and a big towel, and they'll be one of the gentlest dogs you'll ever share a couch with.
