Mastiff (English)

Giant; 120–230 lbsLow6–10 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Small homes, tight budgets, hot climates, tidy households (drool), or anyone unwilling to train and socialize a dog that will outweigh them. Not a beginner's giant.

Bred to do

An ancient English guardian breed bred to protect home and livestock — enormous, calm, and courageous, relying on sheer presence.

Exercise needs

Low–moderate — daily walks and gentle activity. They're mellow and easily overheated; over-exercising a young Mastiff harms developing joints.

Temperament

Calm, dignified, affectionate with family, and naturally protective. Gentle and devoted at home, watchful and reserved with strangers.

Trainability

Moderate — willing but sensitive and a bit stubborn. Early training and socialization are essential, because you cannot physically manage an untrained dog this size.

With kids & pets

Generally gentle and tolerant with family kids, but the size and mass mean close supervision. Socialize the guarding instinct; some can be dog-selective.

Living situation

Adaptable in temperament (calm indoors) but needs real space simply to exist, plus cool air. Drool and size make small, tidy homes tough.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, easy grooming, moderate shedding — and a lot of drool. Keep facial wrinkles clean.

Health & costs

Hard giant-breed truths: very short lifespan, hip/elbow dysplasia, bloat, heart conditions, and joint disease. Everything costs XL; insurance strongly recommended.

Best fit

Experienced, space- and budget-ready owners who want a calm, devoted guardian and can accept giant-breed costs and a heartbreakingly short life.

A note from Kerri

Mastiffs are gentle, noble, and astonishingly devoted — but this is one of the biggest commitments in dogdom. The lifespan is short, the costs are enormous, and the drool is legendary. If you're ready for all of it, few dogs guard your heart quite like a Mastiff.
