Bloodhound

Large; 80–110 lbsModerate10–12 years lifespan

Who this breed is NOT for

Off-leash hopefuls, tidy or noise-sensitive households, or anyone wanting quick obedience. That nose runs the show, and the baying and drool are part of the deal.

Bred to do

The legendary scent-tracking hound — bred to follow a trail for miles with an unmatched nose, used for search-and-rescue and tracking. Nose first, everything else second.

Exercise needs

Moderate–high — needs long walks and, ideally, chances to use that nose (tracking, scent games). Once on a scent, they are single-minded and tireless.

Temperament

Gentle, affectionate, easygoing, and famously stubborn. Sweet and tolerant at home, but ruled by their nose and prone to baying loudly.

Trainability

Challenging — intelligent but independent and scent-driven; recall is very difficult because a trail overrides everything. Patience, humor, and a secure leash/fence are essential.

With kids & pets

Wonderful, patient, and tolerant with kids and other dogs — one of the more easygoing large hounds. Just big and clumsy enough to bowl over toddlers.

Living situation

Needs space and a very secure fence — they follow their nose over or under anything. The baying/howling makes close neighbors a challenge. Some drool.

Grooming & shedding

Short coat, easy grooming, moderate shedding — but the long ears and facial folds need regular cleaning, and they drool and can be 'houndy' smelling.

Health & costs

Watch for bloat (a serious risk — learn the signs), hip/elbow dysplasia, ear infections, and eye issues (entropion/ectropion). Large-breed costs; insurance worth considering.

Best fit

Patient people with space, a secure yard, and a sense of humor, who love a gentle, scent-driven hound and can offer real sniffing outlets.

A note from Kerri

Bloodhounds are gentle, lovable, and endlessly patient — but they are a nose with a dog attached. Recall is a lifelong project, the howling is real, and the drool is impressive. If you've got a secure fence, patience, and a laugh handy, they're one of the sweetest big goofballs around.
